Mt.Kenya is the second tallest mountain in Africa after Mt.Kilimanjaro in Tanzania.
The two peaks on Mt. Kenya, Batian (5,200m) and Nelion (5,188) are accessable through technical climbing. Point Lenana (4,985m) is accessable through normal hiking, using any of these two routes:
Day 1: Transfer from Nairobi depart at 7:00am and drive on tarmac road to Nanyuki 180 km from Nairobi and approach the park gate. After gate formalities, hike though the rain forest to Old Moses Camp (3,300 m). The hike takes about 4 hours, gaining a total of 700m in altitude. Overnight stay at Old Moses Camp.
Day 2: Depart at 7:00am after breakfast and trek through varying terrains and Moorlands. The 6 hours trekking journey leads us to the base of the mountain’s Tallest peaks. We shall have stop over for short picnics. We arrive at Shipton Camp (4,200m) gaining a total of 900m in altitude.
Day 3: Pre - dawn attack of Point Lenana ( 4,985 m ) starts at 0300 hours. The 3 hour hike takes you through steep glaciers and rugged snow covered rocks. You will have a spectacular view of sunrise. On a clear morning Mt. Kilimanjaro, which is miles away, is clearly visible. We descend to Shipton Camp for breakfast and then descend further to Old Moses Camp for lunch and overnight stay.
Day 4: After breakfast descend to park gate and after gate formalities drive back to Nairobi
Day 1: Transfer from Nairobi depart at 7:00am and drive leisurely on a tarmac road through Nanyuki. Within 3 hours, we arrive in Chogoria. Enjoy the beautiful landscape and the view of Mt.Kenya. After lunch take acclimatization walk around Chogoria which is 2,800m above sea level. Overnight stay at Chogoria.
Day 2: After breakfast, depart for Mintos camp, though beautiful landscape and varying vegetation. The trek from Chogoria to Mintos camp takes 6 hours at comfortable walking pace. Altitude at Mintos is 4,350m above sea level. Lunch will be served on the way. Overnight stay at Mintos camp.
Day 3: After breakfast, depart for Shipton’s Hut via point Lenana. The terrain is rugged and temperature is below zero. Three hours trek will take us to point Lenana, which is 4,985m above sea level. The snow covered rocks and steep glaciers are an exhilarating site. From point Lenana, we start descending to Shiptons Hut that is 2 hours away. Lunch is served and an overnight stay at the Shiptons huts. Altitude at Shipton Camp is 4,200m above sea level.
Day 4: After breakfast depart for Old Moses and trek through the Mackinders Valley. The scenery is just spectacular. Lunch is served on the way. We arrive at Old Moses Huts after a 5-hour trek, losing 900m in altitude overnight stay at the Old Moses Hut.
Day 5: After breakfast, we descend further for park gate. The 2 hours trek is lovely and warm. After the gate formalities, we drive back to Nairobi.
